Friday August 6
We were going to head to Quesnell today and then Merritt on Saturday but mom and dad decided to push through all the way to Merritt. So a really long day for everyone but at least we didn't have to set up the trailer when we got there! We're going to spend some time here visiting with Grandpa, Auntie Christine, cousin Brenden and Nana and Papa and then we'll be heading home to Squamish!

Day 42
Thursday August 5
We finally left Smithers! Just a short trip today to Burns Lake. After setting up camp and having some lunch, it was time for some more riding. With a map in hand we hit the trails. Mom and dad got some riding pics...
And afterwards we all jumped in the lake. Ok, I didn't, something about leaches so I don't think I missed out on anything.

Day 41
Wednesday August 4
We had to get up early this morning so mom could go ride 'Back Door' with Gabe from the bike shop. Dad and I drove them up there and we saw a deer on the way up - with antlers too! Alas, no pictures. Mom had a great ride and liked the trail as much as dad did. After grabbing a coffee in town we went back to camp and dad did some work on Colonel Mustard and then we decided it was just too hot out so we went to Round Lake. There was a tiny beach area but it was a good choice because Luna could come with us. I camped out in the little fort that dad built me to keep me out of the sun and mom and dad took turns going for a dip in the lake. Mom took me swimming for a bit too! There were a couple of other people at the lake; a mom and her daughter and friend. The kids swam out to the dock and the mom couldn't resist playing with Luna. She had her own dog, a little hairy weiner dog but he wasn't much of a swimmer!

Day 40
Tuesday August 3
Today we had a lazy morning and dad made us bacon and eggs for breakfast. I didn't get to try the bacon but I had some eggs. In the afternoon we went back up to the ski hill so dad could ride 'Back Door' which goes from almost the top of one of the t-bars all the way into town. I think it took him just under 40 minutes to ride all the way down. He even beat mom and I in the truck but we got stopped on the road for construction. In the evening mom went into town for a 'ladies ride' from the bike shop. It was just her and one of the owners, Gabe, and they did some fun trails on the bluffs. A pedal up so that was hot and tiring but they finished the ride with a swim in the lake! Mom brought back pizza for dinner but I was already asleep by the time she got back. While mom was riding, dad and I hung out and he took me and Luna back down to the river for a swim. I watched from the chariot while dad and luna got cooled off and then dad let me play in the sand. I got so dirty that I had to have a shower again - not a fan!

Day 39
Monday August 2
More riding again today, I'm getting really good at being the shuttle baby. But it's just for a few hours so I don't mind. We did some warm-up runs on Huckin' Eh and then went up top to the ski hill but this time rode Piper Cross and Piper Down. We took a quick picnic lunch before the last two runs but there were so many bugs, and some deer flies so dad was worried that I was going to get carried away. After lunch there was some clouds rolling in so just a couple more quick runs and we left. Back in Telkwa it wasn't raining so we stopped for ice cream! I didn't get my own, even though they had kids' cones but dad let me try his. After that it was cleaning time so I got to shower with dad. I didn't like it one bit!

Day 38
Sunday August 1
Lazy morning with french toast - yum then off to ride the trails. Started with Huckin' Eh, dad rode then mom rode but there was an error in the map and going right on the quad trail did not, in fact, go to the cul-de-sac at the end of Ptarmigan, it ended up several kilometres away on another street so a long pedal back to the car. A couple more laps on Huckin' Eh and then we went up the mountain further to check out Paydirt. Two laps each there and the day was over. Back to the trailer and then a walk along the river into Telkwa and a river swim. Then home for dinner and bed. Mom and dad stayed up sitting outside playing backgammon until the bugs got to be too much!

Day 37
Saturday July 31st
Off to Smithers today, went to Fort Telkwa to set up camp, we had made a reservation since it's a long weekend but apparently everyone takes off for the weekend! Back into Smithers to run errands, went to the info centre, got some trail info, went to the bike shop, got lots of trail info, went to the brewery, had some samples, bought some beer. Back to camp. Very hot out

Day 36
Friday July 30th
Up early to head to Hyder to check out the bears at Fish Creek. There is no border crossing to get into Hyder. Stopped at Fish Creek and there were lots of fish, turns out the fish only showed up 4 days ago! Saw a medium size bear off in the distance but he was too shy and ran off the other way. Waited for a while, did the glacier drive, back again but nothing. Back to camp and laundry then more bear watching, saw one, waited a while, saw nothing, home for dinner and a movie

Day 35
Thursday July 29th
Well, it turns out we left the Yukon just in time. We found out this morning that the north end of the Cassiar Highway is closed just south of Watson Lake. So if we'd been a day later then we'd either have to wait or take the Alaska Highway home and that just wouldn't work with all of our plans. I guess there is a big forest fire up that way, we saw a helicopter with a water bucket but didn't see or smell any signs of a fire. I guess the wind shifted! Anyway, we were originally going to stay in Meziadin Junction for tonight and tomorrow night but apparently there is nothing there so we'll head all the way into Stewart. It was a pretty good drive and we found a nice spot to stay for two nights at the municipal campground. It has electricity but alas, no internet. After we set up camp, we walked around the town of Stewart which took about 5 minutes! Ok, maybe a bit longer than that and then mom and dad stopped for a beer and I charmed the locals.

Day 34
Wednesday July 28th
We've officially left the Yukon! Now we're heading south on the Stewart/Cassiar highway and it sure is different than the Alaska Highway. This one is barely paved, sometimes it's not and it's bumpy and bendy and a bit scary. But mom and dad think it's very scenic! I mostly sleep in the car so I wouldn't know. Unlike yesterday I didn't feel much like sleeping today so it was not so much fun for mom and dad when I got cranky. Ah well, it was a shorter drive at least and we had a nice lunch stop along a river so Luna could swim and dad went wading. We stayed at the Mountain Shadow RV place, which was recommended to mom. The RV side of the campground was full and not very nice anyway so we stayed on the tenting side since they had a few spots with electricity. The advantage of having a small trailer I guess. It was quiet and wooded but we don't get to enjoy the outdoor camping experience very much - there are too many bugs.

Day 33
Tuesday July 27th
Farewell to Whitehorse, we're on the road again. We packed up pretty quick and after saying our goodbyes to Sylvain and Marsha we went into town to meet Kealy for coffee before hitting the road. Today is the longest day of our journey home and as a special treat to mom and dad, I pretty much slept the whole way! We drove all the way to Watson Lake and I only woke up for the last little bit. So we had a late lunch at our campsite and then went in to Watson Lake. We checked out the sign forest and the visitor's centre where we watched a movie about the construction of the Alaska Highway. After getting groceries, we went to the Northern Light Centre to watch a movie on the Aurora Borealis and then an Imax film on the biggness of space. It's big!

Day 32
Monday July 26th
We have to do laundry again today. Sometimes it sure feels like we do a lot of laundry! But we're leaving tomorrow so we've got a bunch of errands to do to get ready to go. Most importantly we have to stock up on beer for our road trip. Mom and dad are really enjoying the Yukon brewery beer!

Day 31
Sunday July 25th
This morning dad went with Sylvain and some of the others to the skills park in town while mom and I relaxed. The plan was to go to Skagway in the afternoon but we didn't end up leaving until around 2. It was a beautiful day in Whitehorse and a beautiful drive but then when we got to Skagway it was cloudy and cold! And since there were no cruise ships in port, the town was pretty much closed. We wandered into a couple of tourist shops to warm up and then finally ran into Sylvain and the others. We went to the Saloon for a beer and a snack, checked out the brewery and then Kealy, mom and dad and I went to the Thai restaurant for dinner before heading back. On the way out of Skagway was saw a black bear running across the road. Well, I didn't see it, I was too busy crying. Just after the border we saw a grizzly bear on the side of the road running into the bush. Again, I was crying too much to notice. Oops, well I slept the whole rest of the way home!

Day 30
Saturday July 24th
We didn't sleep in too late, despite the great accomodations, because mom had some ride plans. She went on a cross-country ride with Marsha and Kealy. There are so many trails in the area! Marsha had to get back by early afternoon so they came back for lunch. Mom hung out with me for the afternoon while dad slept. I guess he wasn't feeling too well. Something about too much wine? Mom snuck out right before dinner for a quick ride with Marsha and Dan. Mom and dad wanted to go to Sanchez for dinner but it was closed, again! That's the second time, I guess we're out of luck. After dinner we were at the yurts and seven Snowbirds flew by in formation. It was very cool, and they were very loud, I think I cried a little bit. Then Dan decided the light was good for some photography so dad went with them on a photo shoot. Unfortunately there was one cloud in the sky so they didn't get any pictures.

Day 29
Friday July 23rd
We were hoping to hike King's Throne today but when we got up it was actually raining! We enjoyed our last breakfast at the B&B, packed the car and set out for Whitehorse. It pretty much rained off and on the whole way, our worst weather day yet!
Back to Whitehorse for errands and laundry. We picked up some more beer and had a late night with Kealy, Marsha and Sylvain at the yurts. And we got to stay in a yurt. Wow, they are very cool! And luxurious!

Day 28
Thursday July 22nd
The weather looked pretty iffy again today so we drove up to the Sheep Mountain visitor info to check out that part of Kluane and maybe do a short hike so we wouldn't get caught out if it started raining. But we lucked out and it was nice and sunny by the time we got up there so we did a 10km hike up Sheep Mountain. We didn't see any sheep though!

After the hike we stopped by at Kluane lake so Luna could cool off and dad went for a swim too! Brr. Mom and I just hung out on the beach.

On the way back to the cabin we went out for dinner, went for ice cream (and I got to try a little sample) and stopped by the visitor centre again.

Day 27
Wednesday July 21st
We were hoping to do some hiking in Kluane today but the weather wasn't looking very good so we decided to go to Haines instead. I slept the whole way there so I missed the beautiful drive. Haines itself wasn't too exciting, we walked around town and checked out a few shops, went for lunch and then went up to the brewery and sampled a few beers and bought a growler. And that was Haines. I slept all the way home too but woke up at the border when we got pulled over. Grandma was wrong about bringing small amounts of beer back we had to pay HST and liquor taxes but luckily the beer itself was only 10 bucks.

Day 26
Tuesday July 20th
Happy 7months to me! Mom and dad are celebrating by taking me on vacation, at least I'm sure that's why we're going! We're heading to Haines Junction for a few days. We wanted to get a good start on the day so we actually got up early! We got to Haines Junction just after lunch and hit the visitor info centre to find a place to stay. We found a nice little B&B that had some cabins. Geez, you'd think after living on a slightly serviced property for two weeks after camping for two weeks that they'd stay in some motel with running water and cable tv. But no, we're staying in cute cabins with no running water and a propane hotplate to cook on. After unpacking and relaxing we head down the highway to Rock Glacier for a mini hike in Kluane.
